Driving time from Malaga airport to Cartajima is 90 minutes. About half way, on an empty stretch of road through the delightful Andalucian countryside, is Meson de Diego.
When the construction began some years ago we were puzzled as to what somebody could possibly be building in the middle of nowhere. When it opened and was a restaurant, we were even more confused about where they expected to get their business from as there isn´t a conurbation nearby. But it is always busy so one has to assume it is passing trade. Diego did a clever thing when he opened here!
They do well because they are perfect for a roadside stop. Friendly quick service. Good basic Spanish food. Reasonable prices. We stopped yesterday: John had secreto (a secret and delicious cut of pork), I had a tortilla de patatas.
I encourage you to take a break and have a coffee at Meson de Diego. You can´t miss it if you come the pretty route from AGP directions for which are here.
Sitting on the terrace as we were, one can see across to the Moorish fortress of Teba, the Castillo de la Estrella, (Star Castle). Sir James Douglas fought in the battle of Teba in 1330 whilst he was en route to Palestine to take Robert the Bruce´s heart back there to be buried. How he wandered so far off course is not known!
